A Web Host With The Most – What is Website Hosting ?

Part 3 of a 7 part “website terminology” series.

Websites need two main components to function.

One is a Domain Name.  The other is Hosting.

So, what is Website Hosting ?  It is essentially some digital space on an internet server’s hard drive where you store the bits and pieces that make up your website.  Your domain name “points” to this digital Web Hosting space, and thus it serves out your website for the world to see.

In real estate terms, your domain name is the “street address”, whereas your web hosting is the “land” that your street address refers to.  Your website itself is the “house” on the “land”, which can be found via a “street address”.

When you have a website, you need somewhere to ‘keep’ it.  All websites occupy space in the World Wide Web, and every website needs to be ‘hosted’ somewhere.

Web hosting companies hire out this digital space for customers to keep their websites in.  It’s easiest to think of these hosting companies as virtual landlords, hiring out virtual houses where people and companies can keep their websites.

Without web hosting you will not be able to build a diy website, which makes web hosting and domain names the first things to consider when starting your website creation.

Some web hosting companies have online website creation tools available to help you actually build a website.  These can be very handy, especially if you are not overly technically minded.

When choosing a web hosting company, the one important thing to look for is the quality of the technical support that they offer.  The hosting company’s Technical Support team will help you if something goes wrong with your website.

A phone call to a helpful tech support person can save hours of grief and confusion !

There is nothing more frustrating than spending time and effort making your website perfect only for something to go wrong or not work as you had expected, and then to have no way of getting in touch with your web hosting company.  The best web hosting companies offer full technical support with call centres, email support, knowledge bases, FAQs and knowledgeable staff.

It is also important that you research the types of packages on offer from different web hosting companies.  Just as houses come in different shapes and sizes, so do websites, and thus so do web hosting packages.

If your website will just be one page, then there is no point paying for hosting that includes space for hundreds or thousands of pages.  If you have a large website that will be receiving lots of visitors, then you will need to pay for a hosting package that allows your website to cope with lots of traffic to it.

It is easy to get bogged down and over think the technical specifications of the multitude of hosting packages available.  Basically, if you are just starting out, then most likely the smaller, cheaper packages will be fine to begin with.  Most hosting companies allow you grow as your site grows.  It’s a simple click of the “upgrade” button to change your hosting package, if you need to.

Website Hosting is surprisingly cheap – for $4 or $5 per month it is possible to get sufficient server space and bandwidth for small to medium websites.

What is website hosting, what does it do, why do you need it ?

  • Website hosting is digital space that you can “rent”.
  • It stores the various components of your website.
  • Without it, your website can not exist.

Before your website creation process has finished and you are the proud owner of a diy website, make sure you have the most suitable web hosting for your project.  Hosting is usually very easy to purchase and set up…. and who knows, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg or Google may come to you asking for advice !

Hopefully this answers the question of what is website hosting.

Matthew
